"The Main Streets designation came from city officials in November. The Boston Main Streets program, coordinated by the Department of Neighborhood Development’s Office of Business Development provides funds and technical assistance to the board, which will be focused on business development and storefront improvements, as well as other quality of life issues in Mattapan Square." - Dorchester Reporter, June 9, 2011

Specific Main Street activities and operations include local promotional and fund-raising events such as road races, parades, auctions, multi-cultural festivals and holiday shopping campaigns that strategically aim to change the image of the business district and attract consumers.

Boston Main Streets districts follow a four-point comprehensive approach that creates and sustains the district’s image: 1) community organization, 2) promotion, 3) design, and 4) economic restructuring.
- Organization: Building collaborative partnerships between a broad range of groups, organizations and constituents who need to be involved in the commercial district’s revitalization.
- Design: Improving the physical appearance of the commercial district- the buildings, streets, sidewalks, window displays, signs, parking, and all other aspects of the physical environment.
- Promotion: Marketing the commercial district to neighborhood residents, investors, visitors, and others.
- Economic Restructuring: Strengthening the commercial district’s existing economic base while gradually expanding it by helping businesses become stronger, by recruiting new businesses, and by introducing new economic functions into the commercial area.
